Special Internet Service Announcement..

by Claire 12/06/2009 05:39
Clark Kent and a fat man in a puffy silver suit are trying to convince me that IE8 is the solution to madness in the new Microsoft today.  Yes, it's more in-your-face entertaining than the Google Chrome one, and there's a crafty face in a monitor whispering about decorative bowls but rather than rush to check IE out, I'm more likely to stay using my current Chrome browser to watch this nice ad again.  It's not groundbreaking, but it makes me smile.

Facebook to get "vanity usernames"

by Claire 11/06/2009 10:20
News in: Facebook's going to be offering its 200 million the ability to replace a string of numbers with a username.  On 12:01 a.m. EDT on Saturday, June 13 (5am on 13 June GMT for us in the UK) the floodgates will open like Selfridges on boxing day with hungry facebook customers jostling for their favourite 'pinkkittygirl' username - or more seriously, the many people that rely on a brand identity (with sites such as twitter, flickr, google, myspace, and domain names) and will hope to continue this through facebook.

One problem though: with over 10% of the world on facebook won't the usernames eventually become as long and as complex as the mass of numbers we started out life with?

More seriously, facebook have issued a warning:

"Think carefully about the username you choose. Once it's been selected, you won't be able to change or transfer it. If you signed up for a Facebook Page after May 31 or a user profile after today at 3 p.m. EDT, you may not be able to sign up for a username immediately because of steps we've taken to prevent abuse or "squatting" on names," they say.

So what about brands and celebrities that are too slow for this bandwagon? With Twitter busy this week creating 'verified accounts' for its users this week following a string of complaints from celebs about fake accounts, will Facebook come up with a response to this?

Maybe we shouldn't take ourselves so seriously all the time..
